First published in 2022, the RectifHyd dataset provides hydrologically consistent estimates of monthly net generation for approximately 1,500 hydropower plants in the United States, addressing a gap in industrial surveys that have collected monthly generation data from only ~10% of plants post-2003. Here we present RectifHydPlus—an extended and enhanced dataset that improves on both the proxy information and temporal downscaling methodology adopted in RectifHyd. In addition to providing updated estimates of historical monthly generation for 590 plants with >10 MW nameplate capacity from 1980 through 2019, RectifHydPlus adds a hydrological control dataset that isolates the influence of historical water availability on generation. The new hydrological control dataset is suited to applications seeking to represent the capabilities of the contemporary fleet subject to historical interannual variability in climate. RectifHydPlus also includes a forty-year, daily-resolution, spill-adjusted water release time series for each dam, allowing users to aggregate generation estimates to the desired temporal resolution.

This paper documents a reversal in the groundwater salinity depth gradient in the North Coles Levee Oil Field in the San Joaquin Valley, California. Salinity, measured in mg/L, was mapped with water quality data from groundwater and oil and gas wells and salinity estimated from oil and gas well borehole geophysical logs using Archie's equation. The resulting three-dimensional salinity volume shows groundwater salinity increasing with depth through the Tulare and San Joaquin Formations to about 50,000 mg/L at 1100 m depth, then decreasing to 10,000–31,000 mg/L in the Etchegoin Formation at 1400 m depth. The high salinity zone occurs near the base of the San Joaquin Formation in sand lenses in shales that have been interpreted as representing a mudflat environment. The groundwater and produced water geochemistry show formation waters lie on the seawater dilution line, indicating the salinity structure is largely the result of dilution or evaporation of seawater and not due to water–rock interactions. Instead, changing depositional environments linked to decreasing sea level may be responsible for variably saline water at or near the time of deposition, leading to a salinity reversal preserved in connate waters. The steepness of the salinity reversal varies laterally, possibly due to post-depositional freshwater recharge allowed by thick sands, alternatively, by a change in connate water composition due to a lateral facies change present at the time of deposition. These results illustrate geologic and paleogeographic processes that drive the vertical salinity structure of groundwater in shallow alluvial basins.

Alluvial valley aquifers are important sources of water supply in many areas but effects of co-located oil and gas development on these resources have not been widely reported, especially in settings where recharge is dominated by stream infiltration. Interpreting the presence of geochemical indicators in the context of hydrology, geology, and other factors provides a more complete understanding of the relations between groundwater and sources of oil-field fluids and aids in identifying risks associated with oil and gas development. Groundwater and Salinas River water samples were collected in an alluvial valley near the San Ardo Oil Field in Monterey County, California and analyzed for a wide range of dissolved chemical, gas, and isotopic constituents to determine if oil-field fluids (water and gas from oil-producing and non-producing zones) have mixed with fresh groundwater used for supply. Hydraulic gradients, age-dating tracers, and other geochemical indicators showed that recharge from the Salinas River has the potential to dilute oil-field fluids that might migrate or seep into the aquifer. Groundwater and Salinas River water collected downgradient of the San Ardo Oil Field showed little or no evidence of mixing with oil-field fluids. Some samples within the oil field contained trace amounts of hydrocarbons or elevated temperatures, indicating that any potential effects from oil-field activities are minor or have been diluted by recharge from the Salinas River. The two samples with the most geochemical evidence of potential mixing with oil-field fluids (SP-18 and GW-17) were collected west of or along the Los Lobos fault, where naturally occurring hydrocarbons are near the land surface. Those samples were also collected near active or inactive oil-field wells, and so anthropogenic activities and pathways could not be ruled out as a cause of trace detections of hydrocarbons and elevated temperatures in the aquifer.

Groundwater quality and potential sources and migration pathways of chemical constituents associated with hydrocarbon-bearing formations were assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey for the California State Water Resources Control Board Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program (RMP). Groundwater samples were collected as part of the RMP from 21 preexisting wells used for public supply, monitoring, or irrigation in and near the Montebello Oil Field and analyzed for constituents associated with hydrocarbon-bearing formations and constituents used to identify recently recharged groundwater and older groundwater. The newly collected RMP data were supplemented with historical sample data from 849 groundwater wells and analyzed with respect to explanatory factors that have the potential to influence water quality. Potential sources and migration pathways of fluids (water, gas, or oil) from hydrocarbon-bearing formations that could affect groundwater quality in the Montebello Oil Field include large volumes of recycled produced water (water withdrawn from an oil well and brought to the surface that may include oil, water, and gas from the geologic formation and water or gas injected for enhanced recovery) that have been reinjected since the 1960s to enhance oil production, oil and gas wells with well-integrity issues, and oil and gas wells with an uncemented annulus that intersects groundwater resource zones. Trace amounts of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons, thermogenic gas (propane through pentane range), or both, were detected in seven groundwater samples collected in 2014 and 2018 as part of the RMP. Five of those samples also contained manufactured volatile organic compounds and at least some modern-age groundwater (recharged during or after 1953), indicating that the hydrocarbons could have originated from surficial, or shallow, sources unrelated to oil and gas development. Two samples contained low concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons (less than 0.1 microgram per liter) and did not contain detections of manufactured volatile organic compounds in pre-modern groundwater. These samples were collected from relatively deep wells (greater than 140 meters below land surface) with perforations completed in marine sediments that may contain water with similar compositions to produced water. The RMP sample results and available historical data in and near the Montebello Oil Field did not provide conclusive evidence that oil and gas development has adversely affected groundwater resources. All samples with detectable petroleum hydrocarbons, thermogenic gases, or both, were collected from sites that also are within 500 meters of anthropogenic hydrocarbon sources not associated with oil and gas development or sources. In addition, naturally occurring sources of hydrocarbons that exist at intervals shallower than, or are in areas outside of, economically productive oil- and gas-producing zones could affect groundwater quality. A definitive analysis of relations of groundwater quality to potential anthropogenic and natural explanatory factors was not possible because of the low density of new and historical sampling data, particularly in parts of the Montebello Oil Field where the largest relative risks to groundwater from hydrocarbon-bearing formations exist. Areas to consider for more detailed monitoring and analysis in the future that may present the largest relative potential risks to groundwater quality include (1) areas downgradient from historical surface ponds and sumps and (2) areas with co-located high net injection (oil reservoir injection exceeds production), old oil and gas wells that may be more likely to develop well-integrity issues than newer wells, and oil and gas wells with uncemented boreholes intersecting groundwater zones. To help fill gaps resulting from sparse groundwater wells, temperature and resistivity borehole log data could be analyzed to locate anomalies that identify potential areas where relatively warm or saline water from deeper hydrocarbon-bearing formations is present in groundwater.

Groundwater-quality data and potential fluid-migration pathways near the Placerita Oil Field in Los Angeles County, California, were examined by the U.S. Geological Survey to determine if oil-field fluids (water and gas from oil-producing and non-producing zones) have mixed with groundwater resources. Six of the 13 new groundwater samples collected for this study contained petroleum hydrocarbons, thermogenic gas, inorganic chemical signatures, and (or) isotopic values consistent with potential mixing with fluids from hydrocarbon-bearing formations.
