In support of PCB modeling for San Leandro Bay, a Priority Margin Unit (PMU) for PCB load reduction in the estuary, fish samples of four species (topsmelt, shiner perch, white croaker, and northern anchovy ) were obtained in August 2016 for both tissue analysis and examination of gut contents. The bay was sampled at eight locations, with a repeated sampling at one location (Airport Lagoon) for one species (topsmelt). Fish were measured, weighed, and dissected, and their gut contents examined microscopically. Topsmelt (9 samples, 188 specimens) had the greatest variety of food items, with gammarid amphipods and chain diatoms predominating. Some topsmelt, especially larger individuals, consumed macroalgae as a major dietary component. Two samples at two sites for shiner perch (20 fish each) had contents composed of close to 50% gammarids at both sites, but differed in proportions of bivalves and polychaetes among the important food items. The one sample of white croaker had consumed mostly gammarids, with fish and polychaetes ranking next in importance. A single sample of northern anchovy (20 fish analyzed) differed radically from the other species in consuming mainly a diatom that appears to have been filtered from the water column. Trace amounts of plastic fiber were seen in all species except shiner perch. All exposure to sediment appeared to have occurred in the top 2 cm of the sediment column, or as contact with flocculent material on plants or hard substrates, or even in the water column, as some fine sand grains were seen in all fish, even anchovy. There was no conclusive evidence of site-specific foraging (site fidelity). The best spatial coverage was for topsmelt, and these fish appear to have fed opportunistically, with some evidence for having fed outside San Leandro Bay.

Intense industrial and urban wastewater pollution has plagued the Tijuana River for decades, causing long-term closure of neighboring beaches. Rico et al. showed that surging wastewater flows in the summer of 2024 enhanced water-to-air hydrogen sulfide (H2S) transfer at a turbulent hotspot, leading to nighttime atmospheric H2S peaks thousands of times greater than typical urban levels. This example makes it clear that poor water quality can drastically affect air quality—an observation with important implications for global waterways.

Despite the legalization of recreational cannabis in California, USA, illegal cannabis cultivation remains pervasive, partly through the establishment of illegal cultivation on public lands (trespass grows). These operations often illegally divert water for irrigation and perform unauthorized applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This work investigates a broad suite of these chemicals, focusing on their persistence in topsoil and presence in water and bed sediment in adjacent streams. Quantitative analyses of pesticides were conducted (183 compounds in water; 176 in topsoil/bed sediment), supplemented by qualitative nontargeted screening at three trespass grows that had no active cultivation for 8 months to 2 years. Targeted multi-residue analysis of topsoil detected the insecticides bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, malathion and imidacloprid (with concentrations up to 38 ng/g dry weight, d.w.), and the fungicides fluopyram, myclobutanil, and triadimefon (concentrations up to 8.1 ng/g d.w.). No pesticides were detected in the companion water or streambed sediment samples from adjacent streams. In addition, no water samples were found to have measurable estrogenic activity. Nontargeted screening uncovered additional pesticides (i.e., spiromesifen, trinexapac) in the topsoil and cannabis-related compounds (i.e., cannabidol, delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol) in both topsoil and streambed sediment suggesting the likelihood of offsite transport of cannabis related compounds. Phthalate plasticizers, rubber-related compounds, pharmaceuticals and personal care product chemicals were detected in topsoil, water, and streambed sediment and may be related to extensive irrigation infrastructure installed at these trespass grows. This work begins to establish a contaminant profile associated with illegal cannabis growing activities, providing a foundation for future research focused on their potential ecological impacts.

The Tijuana River, at the US-Mexico border, discharges millions of gallons of wastewater daily—sewage, industrial waste, and runoff—into the Pacific Ocean, making it the dominant source of coastal pollution in this region. This study examines how such wastewater influences coastal aerosols by tracking spatial gradients from near the border northward. Using benzoylecgonine (a nonvolatile cocaine metabolite) as a sewage tracer, we find that wastewater compounds—including a mixture of illicit drugs, drug metabolites, and chemicals from tires and personal care products—become aerosolized and are detectable in both water and air. Spatial analyses confirm that most measured chemicals concentrate in aerosols near the Tijuana River, potentially exposing local populations to tens of nanograms per hour (e.g., octinoxate and methamphetamine) via inhalation. This airborne pathway highlights a largely overlooked source of atmospheric pollution, emphasizing the need to reassess health risks in coastal regions as global water contamination continues to escalate.

Increased focus on addressing non-point source (NPS) pollution throughout the U.S. has raised awareness of agriculture’s impact on water quality. Growers are being asked to voluntarily limit the effects of their operations on adjacent waterways through programs such those initiated by county Farm Bureaus. If pollution cannot be voluntarily controlled, growers may face mandatory regulatory actions in the future. Maintaining water quality is an ongoing challenge in the Monterey Bay watershed, where industry, urban development, and farming all affect sensitive waterways. Excess nitrogen and phosphorous, herbicides, insecticides, and sediments that end up in sloughs and wetlands surrounding Monterey Bay have compromised water quality, contaminated shellfish, birds, and other wildlife, and generated unsafe levels of nitrate in drinking water.  Although nutrient contamination is well recognized, to date there have been few efforts to link water quality with land uses such as urban development and farming in the region. To determine the way that land uses affect nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations in central coast waterways, researchers Marc Los Huertos, Lowell Gentry, and Carol Shennan have monitored water flow and sampled water quality in the Pajaro River and in other Pajaro Valley and Elkhorn Slough watershed creeks and agricultural drainages, for the past two water years (October 2000–September 2002). The research takes place through the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (the Center) and is part of a larger U.S. Department of Agriculture grant awarded to Center director Shennan. This water quality monitoring program was developed in cooperation with the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, local Resource Conservation Districts, and other groups.  We are particularly interested in the concentrations of two nutrients, nitrogen (nitrate-N) and phosphorus (ortho-P, also known as soluble reactive phosphorus), that are components of non-point source (NPS) pollution originating from urban and agricultural land uses.

A number of spatial patterns were evident in this survey of watersheds from throughout California. Stream sediment concentrations of heavy metals, such as cadmium, copper, lead and zinc, tended to be highest in urbanized Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area watersheds. Metal concentrations in sediments from San Leandro Creek (SF Bay area), Ballona Creek and San Gabriel River (Los Angeles area) were among the highest in the state. These metals are released to the environment from brake pads, plumbing, industrial and commercial activities. Industrial organic compounds such as PCBs (banned since the 1970s), PBDEs (flame retardants) and PAHs (hydrocarbons) were also generally highest in stream sediments from the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas, though high concentrations were also measured in some more remote locations. In contrast to this urban pattern, mercury concentrations were highest in sediments from watersheds where it is geologically abundant and historically mined, though some urban streams also had relatively high mercury levels. The persistent legacy pesticide DDT was found in stream sediments from most urban and agricultural watersheds, where recent soil disturbance from development and tillage likely mobilizes DDT residues from applications more than 40 years ago. Pyrethroid pesticides are increasing in use in California and were detected in 55% of the samples statewide (51 of 92). The highest pyrethroid concentrations were measured in sediments collected from urban watersheds, plus two agricultural watersheds along the central coast. Approximately one quarter of the sediment samples collected were significantly toxic to amphipods, which are resident crustaceans representative of important aquatic food web links. Of these samples, 6.5% were identified as highly toxic. The highly toxic samples were collected from agricultural watersheds in the Tulare basin and central coast, in urban areas of southern California, and in the Tijuana River. Other toxic samples were collected from a wide range of watershed types, including those along the north coast, the Tahoe area, and urban and agricultural areas across the state. On a statewide basis, watersheds with greater than 10% urban land cover had consistently higher sediment pollutant concentrations and toxicity than did watersheds characterized by agricultural or other land cover types. Metals, industrial compounds, DDTs, and pyrethroid pesticides were all found at significantly higher concentrations in urban streams. This pattern is evident at the statewide level, but other local and regional studies have previously shown that pollution levels and toxicity can be strongly related to agricultural and other land uses in specific areas. This is because the “agricultural” land use category used in the SPoT analysis is comprised of many different types of crops and farming practices, and the amount of polluted runoff from these lands varies depending on the types of practices employed.

These sites were scattered throughout the state, with a particular prevalence in the Sierra Nevada and the area north of San Diego. Unfortunately, the Delta region had relatively few sites with low concentration of pollutants. In general, PCB and DDT levels in fish and mussels across California have declined greatly since the 1970s, and many species have bounced back in response to the decline in DDT levels. However, the report also found that present concentrations of pollutants in fish collected from many California water bodies are high enough to cause concern for possible effects on human health and to have a significant impact on the fishing beneficial use. The report found that fish in 68 percent of the water bodies sampled have “moderate to very high levels of mercury or persistent organics (such as PCBs and organochlorinated pesticides like DDT).” Consumption advisories exist for only a fraction of the water bodies likely to need them. Many water bodies with elevated contaminant levels in fish are near population centers and are popular for fishing. Furthermore, subsistence fishing is increasing, and consumption of contaminated fish is an environmental justice issue.
