DWR, in partnership with the Merced Irrigation District (MID), is conducting a preliminary study using flood waters for managed aquifer recharge that can reduce flood risk, increase surface and groundwater supply reliability, and enhance ecosystems in the Merced River Basin. This Merced River Reconnaissance Study (study) is exploring the potential, feasibility, and effectiveness of Flood-MAR concepts, testing theories, and assessing strategies in overcoming barriers and challenges to project planning and implementation. The study will assess current conditions of the Merced River watershed and the vulnerability of these watershed management characteristics to a range of potential climate change futures. The study will also describe the public and private benefits that may be achieved through Flood-MAR strategies and quantify a range of benefits that Flood-MAR could provide in or adjacent to the Merced River watershed.

The new “Need to Know” white paper Metering in California  finds water meters an essential element of effective water management, particularly during the drought. As more Californians take a closer look at the use and management of water resources during the drought, water meters have come under increased scrutiny. Water meters have been in use for decades in most California communities, but they are not yet universal; more than 219,000 urban water connections in the state remain unmetered. “Metering is an essential tool for water management and expanding and improving metering should be a priority for all California utilities,” said Kristina Donnelly, lead author of the study. “While the water savings from metering all connections in California will not create large volumes of water statewide, they can produce considerable local water savings.” Water meters, coupled with effective pricing structures, sends a price signal to customers to reduce excessive or wasteful use. Metering in California finds that metering, and charging customers based on those meters, reduces water use by 15% to 20%. Additional water savings are possible by improving management of the water system, including identifying and repairing leaks in the water system. Moreover, metering provides customers with information about their water use, enabling them to make more informed decisions. Utilities and customers stand to gain from expanding and improving water metering and these benefits are particularly beneficial during this drought period.

This involves learning something about the alternative strategies—some ancient and others not yet operational—for increasing water supplies and/or modifying demand so a supply/demand balance is maintained. This also requires an awareness of the complex economic, environmental, and social issues that increasingly compound what once was considered a purely technological problem, to be left to water resource specialists to solve.

San Mateo County ‘Midcoast’ extends from northern Half Moon Bay to Devils Slide along Highway 1. It encompasses the communities of Montara, Moss Beach, Seal Cove, Princeton, El Granada, and Miramar. Domestic water is supplied to the southern part of the region by Coastside County Water District (CCWD), providing services from Half Moon Bay to Princeton, and by Montara Water and Sanitary District (MWSD) on the north, servicing Montara and Moss Beach. Private wells are scattered through both service districts and outlying areas. With the exception of CCWD, which meets much of its demand through long-term contractual agreements with San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the source of domestic water is from local surface water and groundwater resources. The carrying capacity of the local resources may be considered as the population that can be sustained using conservation measures during an extended drought without undue stress to valued natural habitats.

The Task Force is an 18-agency collaborative effort organized by the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority. It was formed in January 2006 to coordinate water quality improvement activities related to bacteria in the Middle Santa Ana River Watershed. The activities were designed to manage or eliminate sources of bacterial indicators in local waterbodies. The Task Force supports on-going source investigation efforts to identify major sources of bacterial indicators and to understand how to best address them. Task Force resources are allocated on a risk-reduction priority basis in order to achieve compliance where it will provide the greatest improvement in public health.

This report presents the results of a mineral survey of part of the Jacumba (In-ko-pah) Wilderness Study Area (CDCA-368) that was designated by the Bureau of Land Management as suitable for mineral surveys. In this report, the area studied is referred to as the "wilderness study area", or simply "the study area." The study area encompasses approximately 28,443 acres in southwestern Imperial County, Calif. Field work for this report was carried out between 1983 and 1985. Numerous mines, prospects, and claims are present in the study area, but none are being actively mined or prospected. Three sites inside the study area have identified limestone resources that total about 1.8 million tons. Four areas in the northwestern, northern, and eastern parts of the study area have high potential for undiscovered limestone resources. Two north-trending belts in the western and eastern parts of the study area have low resource potential for tungsten.
