Ground-water quality in the Lompoc area, especially in the Lompoc plain, is only marginally acceptable for most uses. Demand for ground water has increased for municipal use since the late 1950's and has continued to be high for irrigation on the Lompoc plain, the principal agricultural area in the Santa Ynez River basin. As use has increased, the quality of ground water has deteriorated in some areas of the Lompoc plain. The dissolved-solids concentration in the main zone of the upper aquifer beneath most of the central and western plains has increased from less than 1,000 milligrams per liter in the 1940's to greater than 2,000 milligrams per liter in the 1960's. Dissolved-solids concentration have remained relatively constant since the 1960's. A three-dimensional finite-difference model was used to simulate ground-water flow in the Lompoc area and a two-dimensional finite-element model was used to simulate solute transport to gain a better understanding of the ground-water system and to evaluate the effects of proposed management plans for the ground-water basin. The aquifer system was simulated in the flow model as four horizontal layers. In the area of the Lompoc plain, the layers represent the shallow, middle, and main zones of the upper aquifer, and the lower aquifer. For the Lompoc upland and Lompoc terrace, the four layers represent the lower aquifer. The solute transport model was used to simulate dissolved-solids transport in the main zone of the upper aquifer beneath the Lompoc plain. The flow and solute-transport models were calibrated to transient conditions for 1941-88. A steady-state simulation was made to provide initial conditions for the transient-state simulation by using long-term average (1941-88) recharge rates. Model-simulated hydraulic heads generally were within 5 feet of measured heads in the main zone for transient conditions. Model-simulated dissolved-solids concentrations for the main zone generally differed less than 200 milligrams per liter from concentrations in 1988.

There are several important water issues in the south Delta related to the San Joaquin River (SJR) inflow, Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP) export pumping, reverse flows in Old and Middle Rivers, tidal water elevations and corresponding tidal flows in south Delta channels, effects of the temporary rock barriers that are installed seasonally by DWR in various south Delta channels, as well as the sources and longitudinal patterns of salinity caused by the net inflows, outflows, and tidal movement of water in south Delta channels. This study investigated the likely inflow locations of higher salinity water (i.e., sources) measured in Old River between the head of Old River and the Delta-Mendota Canal (DMC); the electrical conductivity (EC) at the Old River at Tracy Boulevard EC monitoring station was often the highest EC measured in the south Delta channels and has frequently exceeded the D-1641 EC objectives.

Eight springs and seeps at Fort Irwin National Training Center were described and categorized by their general characteristics, discharge, geophysical properties, and water quality between 2015 and 2017. The data collected establish a modern (2017) baseline of hydrologic conditions at the springs. Two types of springs were identified: (1) precipitation-fed upland springs (Cave, Desert King, Devouge, No Name, and Panther Springs) and (2) groundwater discharge-fed basin springs (Garlic, Bitter, and Jack Springs). Comparison of electrical resistivity tomography data collected at groundwater basin springs from 2015 to 2017 indicated that spring discharge and connection to the underlying groundwater system is highly focused, although the springs themselves appear diffuse and are spread out over a large area.

The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), 120 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert of California, obtains its potable water supply from the Bicycle Valley and Langford Valley groundwater basins; Langford Valley groundwater basin is further subdivided into the Langford Well Lake and Irwin groundwater subbasins. The Irwin groundwater subbasin contains younger, unconsolidated deposits that have a saturated thickness of as much as 200 feet (ft) and a lower aquifer within older unconsolidated deposits as thick as 650 ft. Groundwater recharge under predevelopment conditions (before 1941) occurred primarily from infiltration of intermittent streamflow in small washes that cross the Irwin groundwater subbasin. Since that time, groundwater recharge has increased because of growth of the NTC in recent years and as a result of other processes, including (1) infiltration of treated wastewater into the aquifer through ponds near the NTC wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) and (2) infiltration of imported water and treated wastewater used for landscape irrigation at base housing and athletic fields. Water samples were collected from 17 wells and analyzed for field parameters, chemical constituents, and isotope composition in the Irwin groundwater subbasin between 2014 and 2019. These data were supplemented with water- chemistry data collected during 1993–95 and at other times if available. Between 1993–95 and 2015–19, median dissolved solids and nitrate concentrations in water from wells in the Irwin groundwater subbasin increased from 620 to 1,030 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and from 2.8 to 4.5 mg/L as nitrogen, respectively. After 2014, dissolved solids and nitrate concentrations in water from wells near the NTC WWTF decreased as a result of changes in source water quality attributable to reverse osmosis of treated drinking water delivered within the Irwin groundwater subbasin and to increased levels of treatment at the NTC WWTF. Based on delta oxygen- 18 and delta deuterium isotope data, increases in dissolved solids concentrations in water from most wells were consistent with evaporation prior to recharge and mobilization of soluble salts from the unsaturated zone. Arsenic and fluoride concentrations in water from wells decreased between 1993–95 and 2015–19 as the basin filled with treated wastewater, but 2015–19 concentrations generally exceeded the California State Water Resources Control Board maximum contaminant levels of 10 micrograms per liter for arsenic and 2 mg/L for fluoride. Most groundwater in the Irwin groundwater subbasin has unadjusted carbon- 14 ages ranging from 18,400 to 12,350 years before present. However, water from well 10E3, located along the wash near the subbasin outflow in the southeastern part of the Irwin groundwater subbasin, contained measurable tritium, which is consistent with infiltration of intermittent streamflow and groundwater recharge from the wash after 1952. Chemical and isotopic data indicate that treated wastewater is present in water from most wells in the upper aquifer that underlies the Irwin groundwater subbasin. Wells were not sampled to adequately determine the extent of treated wastewater and changes in water quality within the lower aquifer that underlies the Irwin groundwater subbasin.

Global plastic litter pollution has been increasing alongside demand since plastic products gained commercial popularity in the 1930s. Current plastic pollutant research has generally assumed that once plastics enter the ocean they are there to stay, retained permanently within the ocean currents, biota or sediment until eventual deposition on the sea floor or become washed up onto the beach. In contrast to this, we suggest it appears that some plastic particles could be leaving the sea and entering the atmosphere along with sea salt, bacteria, viruses and algae. This occurs via the process of bubble burst ejection and wave action, for example from strong wind or sea state turbulence. In this manuscript we review evidence from the existing literature which is relevant to this theory and follow this with a pilot study which analyses microplastics (MP) in sea spray. Here we show first evidence of MP particles, analysed by μRaman, in marine boundary layer air samples on the French Atlantic coast during both onshore (average of 2.9MP/m3) and offshore (average of 9.6MP/ m3) winds. Notably, during sampling, the convergence of sea breeze meant our samples were dominated by sea spray, increasing our capacity to sample MPs if they were released from the sea. Our results indicate a potential for MPs to be released from the marine environment into the atmosphere by sea-spray giving a globally extrapolated figure of 136,000 ton/yr blowing on shore.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (the Delta) has complex and evolving ecosystems characterized by multiple food webs that vary in time and space. Here, food webs are defined as the network of species interactions (competition, predation) and interactions with their environment that are related through the flow of energy through the ecosystem (e.g., Paine 1980). Physical modifications, in addition to the introduction of non-native species and the changing climate, have significantly altered the structure and energetic pathways of the food webs for decades. The science clearly suggests that predicting the impacts of habitat restoration, fisheries, changes in environmental drivers (e.g., climate, changes in nutrient loading, invasive species) on the ecological carrying capacity and productivity of the Delta, as well as the bioaccumulation of contaminants on species or the ecosystem, requires an understanding of food web processes.

Key points Lake heatwaves have increased in average intensity, average duration and total duration globally, at rates of 0.15 ± 0.3 °C per decade, 2.1 ± 3.1 days per decade and 8.8 ± 7.6 days per decade, respectively, since the 1980s. The probability of lake heatwave events is three times more likely in a 1.5 °C warming scenario and 25 times more likely in a 3.5 °C scenario compared with pre-industrial conditions. Half of the world’s largest lakes experienced declines in water storage between 1992 and 2020, accompanied by corresponding reductions in surface extent. Extreme events in lakes can cause considerable impacts, including the onset of hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, disruption of food webs and loss of ecosystem services. Basin-scale anthropogenic stressors, such as nutrient enrichment, land-use change and water withdrawal, interact with climate extremes to increase the frequency, intensity and ecological consequences of in-lake extremes.
