Microplastic is commonly defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm. In 2015, the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP) conducted a special study to measure microplastic in treated wastewater effluent and Bay surface water. Bay surface water appeared to have higher microplastic levels than other urban water bodies sampled in North America, such as the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay. Microbeads derived from personal care products and tiny fibers, a portion of which were likely derived from synthetic clothing, were recovered from all nine Bay sites. Tiny particles, primarily fibers, were also detected in treated effluent from Bay Area facilities; not all of these particles are known to be plastic. These findings received considerable media attention and catalyzed state and federal policy shifts. In 2016, the RMP authorized a special study to develop a strategy for continued study of microplastic in San Francisco Bay. To form this strategy, the RMP convened stakeholders to articulate management questions specific to microplastic pollution, and then conducted a one-day workshop that brought together stakeholders and microplastic experts to develop an understanding of the state of the science on this emerging contaminant, and determine consensus priorities for future work. The resulting strategy document provides: • an overview of microplastic science relevant to San Francisco Bay, • the management questions that will guide future work, • a summary of available sampling and analysis methods, and • a multi-year plan for studies that would provide answers to the management questions. The monitoring and management of both macro- and microplastic are issues that extend beyond the scope of the RMP. In this document, we seek to identify data gaps, next steps, and strategic partners who can help provide information and resources to inform management decisions. This Microplastic Strategy will be refined and adjusted in years to come based on advances in understanding and changes in the sources and management of plastic pollution.

Municipal wastewater effluent has been proposed as one pathway for microplastics to enter the aquatic environment. Here we present a broad study of municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent as a pathway for microplastic pollution to enter receiving waters. A total of 90 samples were analyzed from 17 different facilities across the United States. Averaging all facilities and sampling dates, 0.05 ± 0.024 microparticles were found per liter of effluent. Though a small value on a per liter basis, even minor municipal wastewater treatment facilities process millions of liters of wastewater each day, yielding daily discharges that ranged from ∼50,000 up to nearly 15 million particles. Averaging across the 17 facilities tested, our results indicate that wastewater treatment facilities are releasing over 4 million microparticles per facility per day. Fibers and fragments were found to be the most common type of particle within the effluent; however, some fibers may be derived from non-plastic sources. Considerable inter- and intra-facility variation in discharge concentrations, as well as the relative proportions of particle types, was observed. Statistical analysis suggested facilities serving larger populations discharged more particles. Results did not suggest tertiary filtration treatments were an effective means of reducing discharge. Assuming that fragments and pellets found in the effluent arise from the ‘microbeads’ found in many cosmetics and personal care products, it is estimated that between 3 and 23 billion (with an average of 13 billion) of these microplastic particles are being released into US waterways every day via municipal wastewater. This estimate can be used to evaluate the contribution of microbeads to microplastic pollution relative to other sources (e.g., plastic litter and debris) and pathways (e.g., stormwater) of discharge.

Based on the detection of microplastics in San Francisco Bay surface water and Bay Area wastewater effluent in 2015, the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP) convened a Microplastic Workgroup (MPWG) in 2016 to discuss the issue, identify management information needs and management questions (MQs), and prioritize studies to provide information to answer these management questions. The MPWG meets annually to review on-going microplastic projects and to conduct strategic long-term planning in response to new information in this rapidly evolving field.

  This dataset describes the quantity and morphology of microplastics in water, surficial sediment, sediment core, fish, and shellfish samples from Lake Mead National Recreation Area (Nevada/Arizona). Water and surficial sediment samples were collected once at 9 locations. A sediment core (33 cm long) was extracted from Las Vegas Bay to assess changes in microplastic deposition over time. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis), and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were sampled at a subset of locations to assess biological uptake of microplastics. Sampling and analysis methods are described in the Processing Steps section of the metadata. All samples were collected in March 2017 except the sediment core, which was collected in March 2018.

Microplastics are an environmental contaminant of growing concern, but there is a lack of information about microplastic distribution, persistence, availability, and biological uptake in freshwater systems. This is especially true for large river systems like the Colorado River that spans multiple states through mostly rural and agricultural land use. This study characterized the quantity and morphology of microplastics in different environmental compartments in two large reservoirs along the Colorado River: Lakes Mead and Mohave, within Lake Mead National Recreation Area. To assess microplastic occurrence, surface water and surficial sediment were sampled at a total of nine locations. Sampling locations targeted different sub-basins with varying levels of anthropogenic impact. Las Vegas Wash, a tributary which delivers treated wastewater to Lake Mead, was also sampled. A sediment core (33 cm long, representing approximately 19 years) was extracted from Las Vegas Bay to assess changes in microplastic deposition over time. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis), and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were sampled at a subset of locations to assess biological uptake of microplastics. Microplastic concentrations were 0.44–9.7 particles/cubic meter at the water surface and 87.5–1,010 particles/kilogram dry weight (kg dw) at the sediment surface. Sediment core concentrations were 220–2,040 particles/kg dw, with no clear increasing or decreasing trend over time. Shellfish microplastic concentrations ranged from 2.7–105 particles/organism, and fish concentrations ranged from 0–19 particles/organism. Fibers were the most abundant particle type found in all sample types. Although sample numbers are small, microplastic concentrations appear to be higher in areas of greater anthropogenic impact. Results from this study improve our understanding of the occurrence and biological uptake of microplastics in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and help fill existing knowledge gaps on microplastics in freshwater environments in the southwestern U.S.

It was formed in January 2006 to coordinate water quality improvement activities related to bacteria in the Middle Santa Ana River Watershed. The activities were designed to manage or eliminate sources of bacterial indicators in local waterbodies. The Task Force supports on-going source investigation efforts to identify major sources of bacterial indicators and to understand how to best address them. Task Force resources are allocated on a risk-reduction priority basis in order to achieve compliance where it will provide the greatest improvement in public health.

The purpose of this report is to present current information on the nature and extent of mining toxins in the Sierra, the problems they pose to human and environmental health, and recommendations for action to address these problems. This is accomplished by examining the best available science from the perspective of communities in the Gold Country, and directing the results to regional nonprofit organizations and local, state, federal, and tribal governments. The area considered by this Initiative is defined to be consistent with the State of California’s Sierra Nevada Conservancy service boundary. Areas of the Sierra Nevada in the State of Nevada were also considered as a secondary topic. This enabled the Initiative to address both the east and west sides of the Sierra, as well as some parts of the Cascade region, all of which were heavily impacted by historic mining. Though the impact of gold mining is the primary focus of the Initiative, gold prospectors found other commodities, including iron, copper, lead, silver, and tungsten which they then mined and sold. This report considers the impact of these mining activities as a secondary topic and in less detail.
