The revitalization of the Los Angeles River presents numerous opportunities and challenges, with over 4.5 million people (more than 10% of California’s population) living within the watershed. Local government and communities have embraced a movement to transform the river from a single benefit flood control channel to a multi-benefit resource. Issues of climate change, population growth, social inequity, and resource scarcity necessitate collaboration across diverse sectors.

The Urban Waters Federal Partnership was created in 2011 by the US EPA and 14 partnering federal bureaus to support local efforts to revitalize urban waterways, which now spans 20 locations across the nation. Watershed Ambassadors serve a critical function to the Urban Waters program as coordinators, facilitators, and leaders. They help accelerate and prioritize on-the-ground projects to improve water quality, restore outdoor spaces and foster community stewardship. This webinar will provide an overview of the Urban Waters Federal Partnership as a collaborative model, demonstrate the importance of the Watershed Ambassador, and showcase how partners are creating a healthy Los Angeles River Watershed for all.

Speaker:

  • Justin Yee is the Management Assistant at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service, and supports planning efforts, communications, and project management. He has served as the Urban Waters Ambassador for the Los Angeles River Watershed since 2016 and has sustained a diverse network of federal and local agencies, NGOs, community groups, and academia. Justin values the personal relationships across various agencies who embrace the common mission of revitalizing the Los Angeles River and its historically under-served communities.
