The California Silver Jackets Team recently completed the Flood After Fire California Toolkit, a technical guide to support hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, and GIS specialists working on wildfire response teams. The toolkit focuses on ways to identify, model, and map flood and debris flow risks after a wildfire occurs, and includes pre-fire/offseason preparedness, data needs, modelling and analysis options, and resource and work product matrices.
Preparing for flooding after fire and identifying areas at the highest risk is a key task of the California’s Watershed Emergency Response Teams. These interdisciplinary, multi-agency teams often include staff that could use the toolkit when responding to a wildfire in California. This presentation will share the purpose, content and structure of the toolkit, and how a Watershed Emergency Response Team integrates work to prepare for flood and debris flow risks after a wildfire.
